movita’s veggie patch – progress report { 2 }

How anything can be growing in our wee veggie patch, I’m not sure. It continues to rain. We haven’t seen blue skies in weeks, in fact, almost a month. But somehow, the radishes are coming up. As of the 12th, we had already seen 100 mm of rain in May – that’s on top of the 125 mm we had in April. And it don’t look like it’s a gunna let up anytime soon. (Yah. It’s pouring outside.)

Thankfully, we had a couple of dryish days on the weekend – no sun, but no torrential rainfalls either. At least the soil dried up a little! The onions don’t seem too bothered, but the carrots must have been washed away – we can’t see even the tiniest of sprouts. We can see some little lettuce leaves poking through the rain-packed soil, and the beginnings of some beets and peas.

I can’t imagine that any of these poor veggies will thrive if we don’t see sun soon. Each morning I check the weather, and each morning I can almost feel tears welling in my eyes as I see day after day of rain forecast. Sometimes the wankers on the weather site post a picture of a sun – a promise, a glimmer of hope – but then, inevitably, they remove the image a few hours later and replace it with a stormy cloud. I figure they’re just trying to prevent riots – you know, make us feel optimistic and stuff, even if it’s just for a little bit. I doubt it’ll work much longer…

Plants are amazingly resilient. Much more than we are, I think. My heart goes out to you – I’ve been complaining that spring seems to have passed us by (I’m still wearing my winter coat, wool, without the lining, though) here in the Boston area. Keep thinking of you, Movita, up there in Nova Scotia, where you seem to be almost floating away.

We have actually had a few days of sunshine (not today, not yesterday or the day before… grumble, grumble…), and very little rain. Sending some (dry!) sunny thoughts your way!!

Okay. You have made me feel a little better – pretty good when you consider it’s pouring outside… Here’s hoping your sunny thoughts hit this neck of the woods soon!

Take heart in your green shoots and know they will soon be reaching for a sun filled sky. We grow plenty of veg in the UK where it is overcast 50% of days, the rest of the time it is raining! The sun will come and your garden will be a great joy to you. In the mean time I suggest cake. It’s what we do in England, in fact on rainy days the police come and check that you are eating sweet treats. I don’t know what happens if you aren’t, I’ve never tried that approach ; )

I was sobbing a little for you and your soggy garden until I reached the last paragraph and then I had to guffaw at the wankers on the weather site!!!! Something is certainly ‘up’ with the weather. We, in contrast to you have almost drought conditions now, that’s why we’ve had to fill up the water butt from the well. Some of our potatoes, second earlies, are flowering already – that’s not right! Swap you some of our sun for some of your rain? Not too much, just enough. Don’t worry about the carrots, they’ll be up.
