Pumpkin Carve-Off 2011 – Group 1

Are you excited? The entries are in! I’ve got some super awesome pumpkins to show you. Some of the competitors sent in two entries! That means that they either a) really like movita, or b) have no real quality of life. And since there were no rules about the number of submissions, I’m posting them all. And here’s the deal: I’ve divided the entries into two groups. If a competitor entered two pumpkins, I put one in each group. I have pitted family members against family members. Bill Beaucoup versus his children, movita versus her sister, and movita against 2.0. Friends and neighbours will battle one another. Festive, right?

There are six entries in each group. Today’s voting (Sunday, October 30th) will determine our final four competitors. The top four entries from today’s voting will compete against one another on Monday, October 31st – Halloween! See how I worked that out? So, that’s the top two entries from Group 1 versus the top two entries from Group 2 in a battle royale tomorrow. I’ll announce the winner on Tuesday, November 1st.

Competitors – encourage your friends to vote – if they like you, they might even vote for your pumpkin. Give ‘em stuff if you have to. Readers – if you’ve got feedback that you feel might help our voters, include it in the comment section. But keep it clean(ish) – we’ve got kids competing for cripes sake.

Here are your Group 1 competitors:

PUMPKIN 1 – Brittany’s Pumpkin – Profile of a Smurf

Brittany is 2.0’s niece. I guess she’s mine too, but because 2.0 and I aren’t actually married (read: living in sin), I’m not sure how that works. I guess she’s my common law niece. Anyhoo, I’m thinking this here Smurf is the bomb. Mostly because when I opened the email in front of Bill and Rosie Beaucoup they yelled, “wow,” really loudly.

PUMPKIN 2 – Dee’s Daughter’s Pumpkin – Minecraft Creeper

Dee, of Deelicious Sweets, sent this entry along on behalf of her daughter. She included the following information: my daughter has to have the biggest pumpkin of all every. single. year.  She decided to carve her pumpkin as a Creeper from the computer game Minecraft.  As you can see by the photo of the actual creeper (the green one in case there was any confusion) she was very successful, with the help of her daddy of course.

I’m thinking this entry will really appeal to those of you who are Minecraft fans. I don’t know what Minecraft is, but I’m betting anyone who reads my blog is probably geeky enough to be all over it.

PUMPKIN 3 – Heatherjay’s Sheep Pumpkin

Heatherjay, from Ironwood Farm, submitted two pumpkins. This is the first. She and her lovely friend Eva, co-designed this entry. Heatherjay sent the following information about her entry: carved by heatherjay, while Eva was making comments over my shoulder like “There should be a sheep…how hard could that be?”, “OK, but now it’s not scary…doesn’t it need to be scary? How about some bats!”, and “Do a tree, but not a tree like I would do…make sure it’s a scary tree.” So, inspired by Ironwood, perverted by Eva and carved by heatherjay. The sheep looks like the mouth, and the bats could be eyes, so make of it what you will.

Brilliant, right?

PUMPKIN 4 – Bill Beaucoup’s Bill Beaucoup

I’m only assuming Bill Beaucoup intended for this pumpkin to look exactly like him. I mean, he didn’t say it was supposed to be his pumpkin twin, but I think it’s implied. This is the first of two entries for Bill Beaucoup, proving that he really is a movita fan. No matter what he says.

PUMPKIN 5 – Haddy’s The Long Goodnight

Haddy is movita’s sister. She sent this entry anonymously from her personal email address to mine, so I put two and two together. This sad little note accompanied her entry:  Dear movita, I’m quite certain you didn’t mean to discriminate against the car-less and husband-less and otherwise-unable-to-lug-heavy-vegetable-matter types when you named your contest Pumpkin Carve-off (instead of the more PC and inclusive Cucurbita Carve-off) and hope you will kindly accept this butternut entry. If it had been helped along by Rosie Beaucoup – and as there’s no evidence of knife-related injury, we know she did not – it might be titled something like “The Long Goodnight.” Love, Anonymous

Is it just me, or is this gourd totally creepy in the most beautiful of ways?

PUMPKIN 6 – 2.0’s Spooky Tree

This year, 2.0 dumped movita for Pumpkin Carve-Off. This pumpkin is the result of his independence. See how he carved the back out to cast a shadow on the wall behind? Genius. And frankly, it’s obvious he held back when we were competing together.

.

That’s it. Get voting. The poll will close at midnight this evening (Atlantic/Halifax, NS time). If you don’t know when that is, google it for heaven’s sake.

These are so awesome! I haven’t even bought a pumpkin yet, never mind carved one. So disorganised! I should be ashamed of myself…

I need the groupings changed as there are three I want to vote for in Group 1 and I might not want to vote for any when I see Group 2.
    Yours truly,

      Sorry, Beaucoup, not gunna happen.

I object to Movita’s sister’s sexist notion that you need a man to carry your pumpkins for you. Get with the century, Hadley!

Uh oh. Now she’s going to get a man to bludgeon you with a butter squash.

I’m quite sure there’s a dirty way to read that, but I am too lazy to figure it out.

A note from Bill Beaucoup: that there are five tombstones in Haddy’s work of art really creeps me out …

Yes, in case you’re wondering. There are five people in our immediate family.

I reassuringly pointed out to BB that two of them are child-sized. Possibly good news for him, if he believes in omens, not so much Turnip and Sprout.
