Barb’s Jingle Birds Rock

Barb's Jingle Birds Rock

Barb sent the following message with her entry:

My entry is titled “Jingle Birds Rock”. I cut down a gingerbread tree, built a bird house, decorated it for the holidays and invited some famous feathered friends to have a party! My family and I have been creating gingerbread entries for a local show/contest since 1996 and it’s a tradition for our little Bear to be a part of every entry. This year he is crashing the party decked out in a clever bird disguise!

Can you find little Bear? GUYS? Do you see him? Click on the photo to enlarge it… see him now? Is it wrong that I kinda want to bite his head off? Probably. The details on this entry are freakin’ my freak. How can it even be real? IS IT REAL? It has a Bob Vila vibe. It’s absolutely perfect. I would actually consider living in that tree – and y’all know how much I hate nature touching me.

Also, Barb has a Pinterest scrapbook dedicated to her family’s past creations. It’s completely disgusting. You can check it out here: http://www.pinterest.com/bramabile/my-gingerbread-scrapbook. Each year, she and her family enter the Gingerbread Wonderland at the Frelinghuysen Arboretum in Morristown, NJ. There are a couple of words in there that I can’t even pronounce, so that means it’s probably legit.

Chloe’s Wintery Cottage

Chloe's Cottage

Chloe's Cottage 2

Chloe is one of my students. She’s pretty awesome. Chloe sent the following information with her entry: name, email address. Nothing else. So, because she sent no other information with her entry, I will tell you a creepy story about Chloe.

One evening in ballet class, Chloe told me that when she becomes rich and famous, she would like to take me on a trip with her. I said that was very nice (praying that she’d splurge for two hotel rooms), and then asked where she would take me. Chloe said she’d take me to the Peeps Factory, because I really like marshmallow Peeps. She said that even if I were terribly old, she would carry my weary body on an airplane. And if I were dead? SHE’D SCOOP MY BODY UP FROM THE GRAVE AND TAKE ME THAT WAY.

I’m gunna pause here and let you absorb that.

SHE’D SCOOP MY BODY UP FROM THE GRAVE.

Her words.

You might also remember Chloe from the ghost incident.

If that information doesn’t persuade you to vote for Chloe’s house, perhaps the adorable white detailing will. Or the silver dragées! Or the little white pathway! Or, the fact that just a couple of weeks ago, Chloe asked if I had been dancing in the Romantic Era. We’re talkin’ 1832, people…

Susannah’s Land of Sweets

Susannah's Land of Sweets

Susannah's Land of Sweets 2

Our next entry comes from Susannah. Susannah based her creation on the Land of Sweets from the Nutcracker. It’s part of the Gingerbread Trail in Saint John, New Brunswick. Now, I don’t want you to think that New Brunswick is actually made of gingerbread trails – it’s not. Though that would be way awesome, wouldn’t it? Imagine the snacking you could do as you toured the province…

I’m gunna pause here and let you absorb that.

Okay, so, to clarify, the “… Gingerbread Trail is an event to get more people supporting local shops and to help build awareness for The Nutcracker performance (a local production with a few imports from the Royal Winnipeg Ballet & Atlantic Ballet Theatre) later this month.”

Come on! Ballet is almost as cool as an edible gingerbread trail! And y’all know how I feel about ballet. And gingerbread. And icing.

This sucker stands about 2 1/2 feet tall. So, it’s about the size of an actual Sugarplum Fairy. Look at the details! The little dancers! The Nutcracker! The decorated cookie border! The sled! I can’t focus my eyes on just one thing. It’s a tower of awesome. I’ve been blinded by gingerbread!

The Yehlings’ Santa’s Village

The Yehlings' Santa's Village

The Yehlings' Santa's Village 2

Glenn, the Yehling Family patriarch, sent the following message with their entry:

Movita,

Here it is, Santa’s Village.

Best regards,

Glenn Yehling

Best regards? What the? Very little fanfare given that The Yehlings scared the ginger crap outta you guys last year. Cripes, Shannon has been talking about that crazy palace for months! Sure, The Yehlings are defending Ginger Champs. And, yes, it’s pretty clear that the Yehling children skip school for weeks in order to better construct their masterpieces. But they’re totally casual about it.

Now, take a look at that village. What elf wouldn’t want to be enslaved there? I’d work there for free if I were allowed to lick the walls on my lunch break. Did you notice the Toy Factory sign? The candied windows with icing shutters? The sled and reindeer? The piped details are killin’ me. And what about Santa’s house? I’d totally shack up with him if something happened to Mrs. Claus. There’s just so much to look at… there’s just so much to eat!

Ten bucks says The Yehlings set this thing ablaze on New Year’s Eve.

The amount of work everyone put into these houses this year is blowing me away!! Frankly, I’m a bit overwhelmed by it all, which is why I chose Chloe’s house. It’s simple and elegant. And I’d afraid of any little girl who offers to scoop people up out of the grave. For reals.

Love the entries, love the commentary!

The amount of work that goes into these is incredible! And I love the story that goes with Chloe’s entry.

After reading the first group of entries, I thought to myself “I said I was going to do this next year… what was I thinking?!” but now I’m actually feeling a little pumped up and inspired. It may suck (seeing as I’ve never tried to construct a gingerbread anything, ever), but I am so going to be in this next year!

This is another tough one, and the Yehling’s house is amazing as expected, but in the end that Jingle Bird House is getting my vote because of it’s simply perfect execution – especially of the angry birds – those expressions are so dead on and I love the way they are placed throughout. That’s talent people. Barb, I don’t even know you – but I want to, because your Jingle Birds DO Rock! You go girl! *internet high five*

Argh these are all amazing too! I shouldn’t have come to look at both round one and round two in the same day it’s been too much I need a lie down now.

Seriously, so well done everyone! I applaud you (and I’m in the office with people around so it’s kind of a big deal but that’s how much I think your work should be recognised).

  6. Michelle Labrie Maple December 18, 2013 at 2:08 pm #

Loving all the entries!! I’m excited to see how I hold up (I’m in Group 4!) I do have to say that Chloe gets my vote for the best story!

  7. Jennie December 18, 2013 at 10:25 pm #

Well, look at all these talented, ginger-making folks. I can barely find the time to paint my toenails let alone rock out a princess gingerbread castle. I need better organizational skills. Y’all rock!

These are incredible! I’m desperately glad I made the arseish move of not entering a house this year. There is no way I could compete…..

Holy Gingerbread! Heartfelt thanks to everyone who voted for us and helped us eek past the 2012 defending champs – Santa’s cottage is just lovely!! Bear and the Jingle Birds are so excited to be in the finals there might be some royal icing droppings all over the tree stump when I get home from work!
