yer dancin’ photos – part 1
So, last week I asked you to send me some dancing photos. Because Sonya (up above) sent me a super awesome photo of herself from 1974. And dance photos make me way happy. Here’s what hit my inbox on the weekend:
That’s Lan up there. You probably remember her from Bake My Cake 2012. She’s wearing the high-waisted jean shorts, and her cousin Buu is wearing the rad white shorts with lace trim. Lan’s not sure if they were about to start or were just finishing a Kid ‘n Play routine. She thinks this photo was taken in 1993, which would make sense, because that’s when youth gangs really started gaining some momentum. Because of the dancing. Awwwwwww yah.
Next up, Alissa. Alissa often comes to dance with me in the summer – I look forward to seeing her face every year. Alissa’s mum, Hilary, sent me a few photos of her – I picked these two to show you. The first is Alissa when she’s like, zero years old. The second is Alissa nowadays. We like to dance on rocks in Nova Scotia. Word.
Below: Alissa’s mum, Hilary!
Hilary is nine years old in this shot, and wearing her “Emperor Waltz” costume. Hilary lamented that most photos from her dancing days don’t seem to include her feet. You might be wondering if she has hobbit feet or something, but she doesn’t. I’ve seen them.
Here’s some more old-school action for ya. Molly from Wonderland Kitchen sent this photo of her mother to me. (Do you read Molly’s blog? You should. It’s the bomb.) These gals are the Baby Nashettes from Nash Dance Studio in Austintown, Ohio, in the early 1960’s. Molly’s mum is on the far left. Awesome, right? Look how happy they are! I get that same look whenever I’m holding a tambourine.
Up next, Katherine and Scott. You might know Katherine from her blog, Eggton. Or perhaps you remember Katherine and Scott from Ginger 2011. Or Bake My Cake 2012. They are pretty obsessed with me. They send me photos and videos and stuff. And they hate The Ruherfords almost as much as I do. Here’s a picture of Scott dancing with Thunder the dog:
Scott looks way into it. Thunder? Not so much. And here’s one of Katherine dancing with Seymour – their new puppy. Katherine says the photo is blurry because she was worried Seymour was going to pee on her. Seymour is looking at Katherine like she’s made outta liverwurst. That’s some kinda love, people.
Remember Alissa and Hilary up there? Remember how Hilary was all: there are no photos of my dancing feet? Whelp, Hilary’s other daughter, Laura, sent me these photos of her mum – AND THERE ARE FEET IN THEM! (And a bright light emitting from her wrist.)
This proves that families just don’t talk anymore. Instead, they send me emails, and I bridge the gap. (You’re welcome.) Laura also sent some pictures of her wee self. Totally freakin’ adorable. It would seem that wrist flare is genetic. Laura is living in Toronto right now. She’s doing the Teacher Training Program at Canada’s National Ballet School, just like I did. Yet another fan, totally obsessed, and trying to be just like me.
Finally, I thought you might like to see this photo of my sister and I. It’s from a production of a Beatrix Potter tale. Haddy appears to be a chick, and I’m a mouse. A mouse with no front teeth and Holly Hobby glasses. I’m basically wearing the same outfit today. No lie.
I don’t know about you, but I feel like dancing now. I’m going to do a major freeze frame off the front steps for the neighbours. And I’ll be back with a second batch of photos for you soon. Like, tomorrow.
I’m all for an in-depth feature investigating the genetics behind light-flaring wrists!
I’m also surrrrre that those girls loved being called the Baby Nashettes, given that they were well-removed from the baby stage of life. Especially the photo sender’s mother, who looks slightly seductive – – which frightens me in its own right.
these really made me smile, thanks so much for sharing. i think i have a recent video of me dancing that i might send to you.
MIGHT send? MIGHT? Dude. Quit livin’ yer thug life for, like, five minutes and send me that video.
These are so cute 🙂
This is the happiest, cutest post I have read in aaaaaaaages.
I did ask my mother if she had any pictures of me in the brief few months I did ballet, she told me she did but that she will never, ever give them to me because she knows I will burn them. I tried to tell her they will be preserved on the internet forever prior to being burnt out of physical existence but she wasn’t having any of it.
Wrist flares…. darn our superhero covers are blown!
This is a fantastic post.
THAT BULLDOG! <3
Alissa’s photo is absolutely stunning! I am always amazed to see dancers in that position. There is a grace there that I just don’t possess. And I love your mouse picture! Something about the missing teeth and gargantu-glasses with those mouse ears is just too cute!!!! And between you and me, Katherine should probably stop posting pix of Thunder and Seymour all over the interweb. Those are some seriously cute dogs. So cute that I might have to wander across the state line into AL one night and relocate them to my house here in GA. Just sayin’.
Thanks Stephanie!
Stephanie, I just went to my new obedience class with Thunder. It’s hard core. Super hard core. By the time she’s done with it, she’ll be able to open the door for you when you come to Alabama, invite you into the parlor room (we don’t have a parlor room, but she doesn’t care) and make you a gimlet.
What!…why didn’t I see this post like….last week? I’m sure there are dancing photos somewhere around here!
You’ve gotta send ’em in! I’m still collecting photos. Because movita readers are super-awesome and don’t care about deadlines!
Scott and Katherine make me swoon.
So it appears my eldest daughter is in possession of the horrendous outtakes my own mother gave her….. what can I say in my defence – my mum was trying to do a ‘semi-professional’ shoot in our living room, on carpet people!!!
Time to plot some revenge me thinks!
this was wonderful. let’s do this again. i could look at photos of katherine and scott dancing with the dogs all. day. long.
I love this!! I wish I could dance… Plagued by the two-left-feet-no-rhythm syndrome.
I have a video of my three sisters, my niece and I doing The Wobble from last Christmas…. I’ll see if I can cut some stills from it.
OR SEND THE VIDEO!!!
