bake my cake 2012
. . .
I’m turning 40 in May. Well, I’m supposed to turn 40, but I haven’t decided if I’m going to do it yet. Anyhoo, to mark the occasion (or non-occaision), I was thinking we could have a friendly competition. Like Pumpkin Carve-Off and Ginger. Because I’m thinking nothing bonds people more than some bad-ass baking.
I know you like to compete. Because you kinda went crazy for Ginger 2011. And a number of people (like, six) have been complaining that because Pumpkin Carve-Off and Ginger fall so close together on the calendar, that they suffer the rest of the year. That they suffer without strangers from the interweb judging what they do. And those same people say they long to please movita. Even if they didn’t say it in those exact words.
So, here’s what I’m thinking: why don’t you get off your rear and bake me a birthday cake? You can compete with other losers cool people from the interweb. An annual birthday cake smack-down. A sugary battle royale. Here’s what you do:
- Create a super-awesome birthday cake for movita. Anything you like. I don’t like rules, so as long as it is a cake, I’m happy. Any style. Any colour. Any theme. Any flavour. Get creative, people. Also, you get to eat the cake (because I don’t want you to go to the trouble of mailing it to me), so you’re already winning.
- Send movita a picture (two maximum) of your super-awesome birthday cake by Friday, April 27th, 2012 @ midnight. In your time zone. Cripes, stop freaking out. Also, if you could downsize your photos to around 500k or less, that would be awesome. Please don’t crash my email. No late entries will be accepted. I’m getting old, and I don’t feel like waiting for stuff any more. Photos shouldn’t include you/your kids/your pets. We just wanna see your cake, Creepy.
- Be sure to send your name and any other information you might want included with your entry. That’s right – I’ll post some lame-ass story you tell me about your super-awesome cake on the interweb. Like, “my boyfriend helped me make a buttercream flower, and then ate it. Isn’t that hilarious!?! LOL!!” Actually, I refuse to post LOL’s on my blog, so don’t bother trying. And if you’re a blogger, feel free to include your blog address, so I can link my readers to ya.
- Watch for a picture of your super-awesome birthday cake to appear on movita beaucoup. I figure only about
foursix of you will enter, so your odds of making it to the site are pretty darn good. Like, basically guaranteed. - Watch people vote for your super-awesome birthday cake. The voting will take place Sunday, April 29 to Tuesday, May 1, 2012. There will be some preliminary rounds on April 29th and 30th, and then the finalists will duke it out on Tuesday, May 1st. You can promote yourself like mad on facebook and twitter. Email people you knew in high school. Bribe people to vote for you. It’s the interweb people, you can use it for more than just porn. The winner will be announced on Wednesday, May 2nd – my birthday.
- Win the respect and admiration of many. And, wait for it… a prize.
The prize has been sponsored by yours truly – because ballet teachers are rich, I say, rich! And don’t worry that I spent my baking school tuition just to make you happy.
The winner will receive:
Ateco’s 55 piece stainless steel decorating kit – this should help you decorate stuff like a pro.
Ateco’s 12-colour food colouring kit – this wee sampler of food colouring gel will bring a little festive into your life.
AND the Joy The Baker Cookbook (paperback) – because if you’re into food blogs, you’ve probably wanted this for months.
So, it’s settled. Start decorating your cakes, and send me your photos. You can send me your entry this week, or slap something together at the last minute like you did in high school.
Email photo(s) of your entry to movita {at} live.ca by Friday, April 27, 2012. Too lazy to copy and paste that email address? Just click on that email button in the right sidebar of this here blog.
Be sure to send your name and any other information you might want included with your entry. Your email will not be posted on the interweb. That would be creepy. Just your first name, the photo(s), and anything dumb you’ve insisted I include about your cake. And don’t send some photo you found online and then claim it as your own. That would be totally lame.
The competition starts… NOW!
That’s such a great idea!!
Thanks, Jen! Don’t you think baking a cake would be a good way to take your mind off other stresses? And don’t you think eating it would do even MORE to take your mind off other stresses?
Just sayin’.

This is brilliant! And I’m not even the competitive type. But your post made me want to compete, or may be I just want to make you a nice cake to help candy coat your ageing issues. Really, turning 40 is thrilling and just to prove it I’m going to pack all of the creative brilliance I have gained since turning 40 into a cake for you. Can’t do it today though so I hope I don’t forget.
Bridget, you must channel all of your creative brilliance into cake. You must!
totally doing this! time to start brainstorming!
OH.MY.GOD. If I DO compete in this, you WILL be eating the cake!
Win win!!
Super awesome idea! Also, May is the best month for birthdays.
Isn’t it though? I think people born in May are generally smarter than everyone else. But that’s just me.
Awesome! I must do this, if only for the reason that I also turn 40 in May. May 3rd, actually.
See? You could bake a cake for ME and then eat it on YOUR birthday! It’s gunna be a good year for us…
Great idea. It will be great to see what everyone comes up with and to share some tips and ideas. Im currently working on a spring themed 84th birthday cake for my grandma so I think Ill be submitting that some time soon
Now you’re thinking! Make a super-awesome cake for grammy and then send in some pics. And sure, she’ll probably be wondering why you made a WAY better cake this year, but she doesn’t have to know… (Uh, but don’t write movita on it – that’ll be a give away.)
I didn’t get my butt in gear to post my kids gingerbread house ( and it was SICK- as in cool- as in incredible). I can say that, since you have no idea what it looked like. It involved blue prints 🙂
So, because I am a designer, not a baker, but LOVE YOUR BLOG, I was thinking about making a styrofoam one and icing it. You will never know. See, you don’t know me, and I am already trying to trick you and take short cuts.
Either way, I will REALLY ENJOY watching the competition. Great idea !!
Lynne xx
A couple of people have mentioned this “secret styrofoam method.” And I say: go for it! I hate rules! Who cares if you can’t actually eat the cake? NOT ME!!
(That being said, given the opportunity, I’d eat a whole cake by myself.)
xox
It’s on. You should know in advance that we may recycle the farm animals we used in our gingerbread house. They’re sitting in a little plastic baggie, looking like they’re ready to get back in the game.
I can only hope you’re not kidding about this.
Count me in! Can’t wait to make you a crazy cool cake and then eat it all by myself alone in a dark room. Haha, just kidding. The lights will be on, but no one else is invited. All for me! 🙂
Brilliant. This is what a competition like this is all about: eating crap all by yourself in a closet. It almost brings a tear to my eye…
hehehe 🙂
What a cool idea! If I will be able to, I most certainly will enter 😀
Cheers

Do it! Do it!
you just made my april; i love this idea! I am SO all over this challenge. count me in.
If you devote all of April to this competition, you will almost certainly win. Or, lose a significant number of friends. Still, you’ll have a cake, so does it really matter?
Oh yes! Baking a birthday cake for Ms. Movita. Hearing her snarky comments about it. Reading about all of the ones that didn’t make it. I am so in.
Yay! I can’t wait to write snarky things about you!
Oooh… I like this idea. It’s like you get a bunch of birthday cakes, but you don’t have to worry about having leftover cake hanging around the house, just taunting you with its buttercreamy deliciousness.
Of course, that does mean that I end up with a cake hanging around the house, taunting me with its buttercreamy deliciousness. A cake that I may possibly eat in one or two sittings, to my hips’ regret.
But for you, dearest Movita, (and… ummm… maybe also the chance to win a shiny prize) I’m willing to make that sacrifice.
Um, I read your blog. I’m thinking we’re in trouble here… AND I’M MEGA EXCITED! Yippie!! Also, if you eat the cake with Diet Coke, it will cancel out the buttercream. That’s a scientific fact.
Oh. You. Are. Good. I’m not so big on these contests but this one I’d consider.
I didn’t realize you were in the 40 range. I liked you before but now I like you better. Me… 44 in April. But 8 is my lucky number, so I can work with it. In fact, it could be the best year I’ve had so far.
Yay! See, Wendy? We’re practically interweb twins! (Now I just have to get my rear to Paris for some bike riding…)
I am totally entering, lol, cuz you know I love ya, lol, and I might have to include a pic of my horse, lol, eating your cake, lol, while my daughter rides her, lol, and the cat chases her, lol, while I tell some lame ass story about my golden years, lol, and spam every one I ever met, lol, so I can win this. LOL! *runs off grinning from ear to ear*
All of a sudden, I’m looking forward to your pictures more than anything else this year… tee hee!!
