family snapshots: the explorers
This is one of my most favourite family photos. That’s Rosie Beaucoup and the Beaucoup children exploring Whale Cove in 1981. My dad took the photo.
I turned in my studio keys yesterday; the curtain lowers on twenty-four years of sweat, laughter and tears. Bill Beaucoup is retiring in two weeks, and my sister is leaving her job to write full time. Endings are unavoidable – heck, we’ve been muddling through for several months now. But those inescapable transitions also provide the opportunity for new adventures. And ulcers, I suppose.
The other day I woke to a message from a friend. It read simply:
Quick. Write something on your blog. I need a laugh. We all need a laugh.
Obviously, I’m going to have to up my game.
2.0 and I have a huge project to tell you about – it’s not pornography so don’t get excited. (Jesus, it’s not a baby either.) And I’m planning to hang out here a little more, which I’m hoping will stop some of you from emailing me to ask for more goddamned posts. I HAVE THREE CATS TO LOOK AFTER.
So here’s to The Explorers – all of us with knots in our tummies and fresh starts on our minds! And here’s to four out of five Beaucoups being unemployed!
(Don’t worry: 2.0 will be in charge of buying all Beaucoup socks and underwear until we get ourselves sorted.)
Thank you for this. I am in my 7th week of unemployment. Job hunting like crazy, but nothing has panned out yet. Laughter is good medicine. Keep it coming, pretty please!
You’re basically an honorary Beaucoup now.
Swoon! I’d like to thank my former employer for making the current situation possible, my family for supporting me in my unemployedness, my four-legged furbabies for attempting to eat me out of hearth and home, and Movita, for believing in me.
*snort*
I’m excited for you! The sky is the limit now and you’re a woman of many talents! Looking forward to more posts here and to see what awesome things will be coming your way as a result! You’ve got this!
Thanks, Mellissa! I bet this is gunna be a great year for both of us! (Let’s eat bacon in advance to celebrate.)
WOOPIE::::the stars must have lined up because I just made your “Double Chocolate Cookies” last night!! No kidding.
I must have at least 15 printed MOVITA recipes in my Kitchen Binder—
If I cannot find you in my IN BOX, I simply make+bake your recipes!!
And I always/forever will give you the credit for my potluck crowd pleasers!!
Is it scary having a million people who love you?
Awe, you can handle it—so step right up!

Teri, your comments always – ALWAYS – make my day!
I’m excited to see what you’re up to next! And to hearing all the deets about the underwear 2.0 will be buying for your family. Vanilla white cotton? Gossamer silk next-to-nothings? Perhaps hand knit from sturdy Canadian wool? The possibilities are endless and bound to be entertaining.
I’m assuming he’ll buy the nicest underwear for my parents (suck up) and then stick me with something itchy.
I hate itchy underwear.
Congratulations on your unemployment! It was during my own involuntary work hiatus in 2012 that I discovered the magic that is Movita. (I came for the “How to paint furniture” post and stayed for the swearing!) I can’t wait to find out what you and 2.0 have planned!
Fuck yeah!
Please don’t worry about Hads as I promise to take care of all underwear responsibilities
for Toronto. Underwear is pretty expensive in the big city so she may have to work with fewer pairs. I’ll make them pretty though. And, if Lucas needs socks, I’ve got them covered too. xo
Thank god. She’s super fussy about clothes and will get really mad at you if you buy the wrong stuff. NO TAKE BACKS!
I love these photos and I’m so selfishly looking forward to reading more Movita. Time for the cats to contribute to the household, right? =)
RIGHT? We’re buying, like, a million dollars worth of cat food every week!
There are never endings…there just new beginnings. Those amazing times at what you loved most.. dancing, will always be with you. And for the bloggers who want more. YOU HAVE CATS…cakes, blogging, and your crazy stories, 2.0, I’m in with you on your new adventure. #movitarules. Enjoy the ride!
I think I’m already in love with my new adventure too!
Is it bad that I just did a happy dance all over my kitchen floor ??!!..
Just the THOUGHT of more Movi makes me MOVE my feet and swirl.
Okay, now I just sound like a dork. I’m am so stinking happy tho. Does that count? :)))))))))))))
I ❤️ dorks.
I love that photo! Reminds me of some of my childhood adventures with my sisters. Looking forward to what’s ahead for you….
Our childhood adventures usually ended with us scaring the shit out of my little brother.
Good times.
Hey Movita: No. 1 Daughter quit her job and is moving to Vancouver. No 1 Son is going back to school and partner as well. No. 1 granddaughter is starting university. All is change. I did go on stage this year at the school closing presentation of senior students. Now that is an accomplishment. But if it wasn’t for Jennifer, don’t know what would have happened.
Nancy, I was teaching during your performance. I can’t believe I missed it! Thank goodness for peer pressure (Jennifer). So often change is for the good – even if it’s a bit scary…
